I don't know whether this is a bad sector on the hard drive or a software issue. I'm assuming formatting and starting fresh will fix the problem if it is software related, however if I could avoid this, that would be fantastic!! so 2 questions, is this hardware or software, and can I fix it without formatting? Thanks in advance, Dave

If your computer still boots, you can fix this with chkdsk /f at the next boot. Sounds like you have Win NT, 2000 or XP - would be nice if you specified which OS you're dealing with....

There are other chkdsk options - /s is one of them. I'm not sure about the McAfee issue mentioned by the other poster. You can look at the link below:

Same problem came up earlier and the guy on here said it was a file from mcafee firewall. so you may need to uninstall and reinstall your mcafee firewall. If you don't have that on your computer, then it's a virus you have posing as mft and you'll either have to search and download a tool to fix and remove or you can remove it from your registry ONLY if you know how... good luck

you can try running scandisk.....but no promises.
