Isabel Allende was the niece of the President who was overthrown and assassinated by the CIA, at the behest of President Nixon. Salvador Allende was was the democratically elected socialist president of Chile. I would trust her account.
After the overthrow, General Augusto Pinochet led a military junta which arrested, tortured and disappeared thousands of people. Human rights disappeared, people became poorer, and the rich, of course, got richer. It was business as usual for the USA.
Thousands of Chileans fled for their lives to live in exile in Canada and various European countries.

i was born in 73 and my parents tell me they had to make endless lines to get me my powder milk!! was the communist regime of salvador allende who supposedly shot himslef during the coup in 9/11 1973. allende was friends with fidel castro and nikita kruchev among other high ranking communists. the economy was closed, they panned it, it was heavily centralized, they expropiated land and property in general (my dads farm and uncles company among many others) and made people poorer than they were. after the coup gen pinochet ruled de facto for 17 years. he transformed the economy into an open, deregulated one, created wealth although the butcher killed and tortured (my stepdad among others) thousands of people. pinochet is still being investigated for his crimes and is has been proven he stole money from the coutry.
