im bringing in fish tanks from abroad into the uk do they have any laws about they glass being the safety shatter proof glass,or are all fishtanks made from standard glass as i was told by the supplier that safety glass can not be curved etc,

Most aquariums are made form standard glass. However, if your concerned about breaking the glass or leaks go with an Acrylic tank which is the second most popular type of aquarium besides glass. It won't crack or have any accidents like glass tanks and is half the weight of a glass aquarium.

I don't know of any specific laws concerning safety glass for fish tanks for home use. Mostly they are made of standard glass. Larger tanks tend to have supporting braces around the top made out of very thick glass.

If you are using the tanks in a public place then it may be wise to use laminated safety glass, or put the tanks behind another layer of acrylic, if there is a big risk of the glass being broken. Outer layer of acrylic also can shield sensitive fish from people tapping on the glass.

Cheaper and smaller tanks can be made of plate glass.

I have never had my glass tank break. But sometimes I want an acrylic tank. However I have seen some of my friends tank get scratched here and there. I don't like the look of it so prefer glass myself. A friend tried buffering a scratch on her thank and it left a splotchy look. How to fix it , I don't know.
