I usually turn on the water and then flip the "on" switch. Works every time for me.

Does it work. You should never let a garbage disposal get full. If it works turn on cold water on the side where the disposal is then turn on the disposal it may take a few minutes being its full. If that doesn't work make sure there is no power going to the disposal and start pulling the crap out and throw away. Then run water down drain. Good Luck.

Sink-mounted garbage disposals are not supposed to need to be emptied. Try putting less stuff into it at a time, or assuming you are truly clueless, find the switch marked "on"! A garbage disposal is a hole in the bottom of the sink with rotating blades that will puree incoming soft garbage into fluid, assuming you remembered to turn on the faucet before hitting "on".

As for how to clean out a genuinely clogged garbage disposal, try high-pressure water or a bottle of liquid plumber. You may also wind up picking the mass of whatever you recently put in it out with a knife or fork.

No emptying necessary, the canister looking part is the motor, not a storage compartment. The blades inside the disposal grind up food and gunk and it goes down the drain (make sure you have the water running while it is in use). If you ever drop anything down the disposal, unplug it and be sure it is unplugged before putting your hand in it.

Turn the faucet on so it's running down the disposal, and then turn the switch to the disposal on.
