Ok I got this dvd burner, its a comstar, and it is not working correctly. When it burns it says the burn was completed successfully, but then it wont play in other computers/my dvd player and sometimes it wont even play in the dvd drive that wrote it! I have tried different media types and different software, I took the drive back and got a new one but now I am lead to believe that the problem is with my Windows? Could this be true and how would I go about fixing something like this?

Ive tried Nero (many different versions to). The jumper is set right all the cables are plugged in ect. As for a format ... Im burning a data dvd with DIVX/XVID Files (my dvd player supports it)

I to got lots of free nero copies because i kept them when i took the drive back twice already so Im thinking its not the drive but a windows problem is all I can think of.

first.. The drive can be set to either slave or master, just so it has a different setting from any other drive on the same cable!

I would be sure that you are burning the disc in the right format, and that you are burning a video file. It may have completed successfully but be in the wrong format.

There are several formats in use for videos on PC's. In many cases they have to be converted before they are burned in order to be seen on regular players.

Oh, you just MIGHT find some help in the User manual for your burner program!!! I doubt that it is a defective burner.
I used to get calls REGULARLY about problems that could have been solved just by READING the user manual.

You may have TOO MUCH software fighting to do the same thing. Sounds like the dvd is burning but not 'finalizing'... put the burnt dvd in and open Nero and FINALIZE the disk and see if that works. Also, if you didn't remove any copy protections then that's your problem. good luck

Check the jumpers on the back are set to Master and it's on the first plug of the secondary IDE channel.
If you can't open your case (too scared or under warranty) take it back to the shop.

Try nero, that's what I use. Don't know if it's free or not. My copy came with the burner when I bought it.

ok, if you want your home dvd player to play the dvd, dont burn the disk as a data disk, choose video files option, then dvd video files (.vob .ifo .bup) if your using nero to burn, change the burning speed to as low as possible (example 16x burner choose 4x) by burning slowly, there is less chance for errors, and your dvd drive's internal motors will last longer
