Perhaps no you have learned a very important lesson in that the outside doesn't matter however you just need to find a good person to show you that there are people in this world that are not cold and ugly on the inside they are just hiding you have to look for them.
As for why are people are obsessed with appearance well the weak minded are not able to look through the gates to the soul and see the true person, so they judge what they can see the outside.
Open your mind forget what you know and you shall learn the ways of the world.

Child, we are not all gross inside there IS beauty in MOST of us. External beauty is fleeting, internal beauty is FOREVER, I'll take the internal any day!
People are obsessed with it because society in error teaches us success in all areas if we are physically attractive.
There IS something to be said for genetics that dictate that the more attractive you are to mates, more mates you can have and the more chance that you will mate and propagate the race.

What we see most of the time is the outside, so thats why we judge people on how they look outside, Jessica Alba is pretty damn fine.

not morbid, just true. we as a society do put a lot into appearances, and not just physical. makes us pretty shallow, coz when all's said and done our bodies will be ashes and dust, and all our possessions can't go with us. dang!
