It has been almost completely abandoned since the early 1980's. There is a small handful still living there, apparently. But you can find find plenty of information, including a detailed book on the fires.

I doubt if rebuilding will ever be an option. The fires in the underlying coal seams continue to burn, emitting toxic gases. The fires will continue to burn for a long time. And if the fires are ever extinguished (they will have to burn out on their own because efforts to stop the fires ended years ago), the ground is subject to significant subsidence.

Its actually still on fire, burning from the coals deep inside the hills and mines. Most of the residents have moved away, making it virtually a ghost town. Will they rebuild? Probably not, the town was only there because of the coal and since its being burned away, there is no real use for a town rebuilding there now.

Today, it has only about 12 people in it. In 1992, Pennsylvania claimed eminent domain on all properties in the borough. In 2002, the U.S. Postal Service revoked it's Zip Code 17927.
