Being American, I assume you mean American Indian.
Indians were the first people to live in the United States. The name Indians came from Columbus because when he landed in what is now know as the West Indies, he never realized he was in the New World. He thought he had reached the Indies, so when he first met these people he had never seen before, he called them Indians.
The first Indians came to America from Asia more than 20,000 years ago. That is debated among scientists, some believe 40,000 years ago. When they came, huge ice sheets covered much of the northern half of the earth, and that is how they had access traveling across the Bering Strait, which today, is separated by Asia and North America.
Personally, they were mistreated and should have never had their land taken away from them by any nationality. They are extremely beautiful people with beautiful features. To this day, I admire their traditions and culture. Extremely interesting.

Indian refers to people of Indian origin or things of the same origin. Red Indians and Indians have much in common: the worship of elements of Natiure, the Sun and the Moon etc. Irrespective of whether Colombus was right or wrong in naming the American Aboriginal people as Indians, there is commonality of the Historical evolution .Upto the stage of separation of GONDWANA into Africa , Australia and Americas and the rump which collided with the Himalayas to form the separate Indian entity which comprised today's Pakistan, INDIA , Bangladesh , Nepal, Bhutan, Burma and Sri Lanka, these pastural lands shared the same life style, Dairying and hunting and primeval Agriculture. Even the Antarctic was a habitable land and the story of RAMAYANA testifies to the fact. Ravana's brother Kumbhakarna was the Governor of Antarctica and that is why he developed the habit of long six months of sleep and six months of wakeful activity.
The inhabitants of Gondwana admired the elements of nature and worshipped the Sun and the Moon whom they saw as daily visitors who influenced matters on Earth such as climate and crops. The Inca Mayans bear close resemblance to Indians in their ritual worships.
Long before the other established Religions of the world had codified the beliefs and systems of social control, the Indians developed the maxim VASUDHAIVA KUTUMBAKAM ..the world is but one family.
While others have problems in accepting Indians as their own, The Indians have no such problem in accepting others as their own and proof of that can be found in the melting pot of Racial strands in India, far more abundantly than anywhere else.
Therefore, An Indian is one who is mentally prepared to accept the Universe as one Common Entity. This is of course, notwithstanding the political postures of some Indians for their narrow ends.

Indians come from a magical place called INDIA. Just like Irish come from the magical island of IRELAND, and Mexicans come from MEXICO. Do you sense a pattern?? See how it makes sense?? Native Americans are NATIVE to the Americas. The Americas make up the continents that we live on, including the countries of Canada, the US, Mexico, and so on. Just because we have brown skin doesn't mean we are the same people; also as a side note, Native Americans like the Paiute and Crow and all the others are the same RACE as Hispanics. We are all NATIVE Americans. WE ARE INDIGENOUS. That means we came from here .
