Today is England's Independence Day of sorts. It's snobbish of me to say it's like the American holiday, seeing as it predated our independence day by almost two hundred years, but it's the same idea. Guy Fawkes, in 1605, tried to blow up the houses of Parliament, but was caught and hanged. People celebrate the prevention of his plot by burning effigies of him and setting off fireworks. By now, it's really just an excuse to have bonfires, fireworks, and a good bit of fun.
