You don't need to be skinny. You need to be fit.

You might feel that you would have been a better dance if you were skinnier. Yeah, if your muscles have less weight to push, you'll go further and faster, you will feel light like a feather.... This is why you feel you'd be a better dancer if you were skinny. Plus, all those stereotypes.... I often find myself thinking along the lines - "If I was skinnier, I'd be a better dancer" but what I really think is "If only I was skinnier with the same muscle mass I have now..." aha, this is closer to reality. But I know it all too well that if I try to lose that "extra" fat I'm bound to lose the muscle with it. Plus, deep down I prefer to look like a woman with curves not like a washboard.

If you are a dancer I'm sure you have good enough judgment to understand that you need to be FIT, not skinny of fat or average. Quality and condition of your muscles is what really counts.

I think all serious dancers have felt a time when they need to be skinny (or skinnier).

That happened to me, not so much with the ballet, but in gymnastics.

I fell under the whole eating disorder thing, OK, lets say it, ANOREXIA. I got help before it was really bad, I knew something was wrong, and I did something about it. New eating habits, support, and I got back to normal. Except, you never get back to normal after something like that. That's a long story told short. I knew I needed muscle, not skin and bones.

So I'm back to normal, you would have never guessed something like that happened. My dancing and gymnastic skills are still great.

Anyway, you don't have to be skinny to be a good dancer. Many good dancers are skinny, many good dancers aren't.

Just dance to the best of your ability and have fun, OK?

you feel that way, most likely because all the dancers on tv are skinny. You do not need to be skinny to be a dancer! Some of my really good friends are dancers, and they are not model thin.
You can be an amazing dancer, not matter what your size

Well first of all the good dancers dance all the time therefore they are just skinny because they practice so hard, so if you are a serious dancer then practice hard and you'll get the body of a dancer! Good luck

cuz that's what the ****** standards are.

some of the most amazing dancers ive ever seen have not been all that skinny. My friend Jackie is a BIG girl and she dances like no other. She's awesome.

So, dont feel like you need to live up to the terrible expectations, cuz im sure youre fine just the way you are. And weight does NOT affect dance ability

This could be because in your bodysuit in ballet class you kinda feel fat! everyone does! ESPCIALLY ME! but i only weigh 90 lbs.. but still there is so much media advice and everything telling you that you need to be skinny so it makes yyou think that you need to be skinny to be a good dancer.. i know this one gurl and she isnt fat.. but she has a little extra.. and she has won all over for her solos..! she is amazing.. just find a inspiration or a something to keep you movetevated... but remeber your perfect the way you are.. and if you can love your self then everyone will also..
good luck

I don't think you need to be skinny to be a good dancer. It is more likely to become a dancer you need to be skinny because of the stereotypes, just like female models-YUK

because in ballet you usually dance with a partner- who has to lift you, etc. That is why dance teachers drum it into kids heads that "thin is good".
Of course you cannot be taller than the partner either. So usually only small skinny girls make it into the ballet. Unless they get so malnourished that their hearts fail or their bones snap- and that's far more common than you might think.

Dance all you want. But only for yourself, for your own happiness. As a job, dancing may sound nice- for a few years. but to exist in real life you need an education.

There are no 35 year old ballerinas

I want to dance, but I always feel that I need to be very strong, and have muscles...I'm a girl, by the way.
I don't know, I think it's just because all the professionals are skinny and muscular and strong and pretty.
Also, when in doubt, watch the video for 'Chain Hang Low', there's a huge women in there for a second who I wish I could dance like...it's awesome.

thats not true, but the reason u probably feel that way is because u r probably surronded by other skinny dancers! no need 2 worry because as long as yr enjoying dance than u should do it anyway, personally i'm not the skinnest girl around but u know wat i love dance and am in a company. i don;t let my weight get 2 me that much. just focus on yr improving in dance, not shrinking yr belly. :)
