Woke from a deep sleep last night to hear noise, look out window, and see trees/bushes swathed in tp. Is this a California tradition? No one tp'd houses when I was growing up in the south/on the East Coast. I saw who did it (doubt they will do it again as I banged on window and screamed like a banshee). My son is very upset with me for my reaction -- claims it's all in fun, that it means the girl who did it likes him (he is only 10!). I say it's vandalism because it took me an age to clean all the lousy stuff up. What's worse, the child's mother denied that she had done it when my son asked her about it this morning. ! I saw her plain as day! Just drop it? I still feel angry about it and am tempted to tell the child and her mother that I didn't appreciate the vandalism at all, and that if it happens again I'll call the police and have them cited. Don't get me wrong; I'm usually pretty mild mannered and don't mix it up with my neighbors. For some reason this has incensed me.

I would def. call the child's mother and warn her that you saw her daughter and if this happens again you will be calling the police. I wouldn't listen to the people telling you to "get over it, it's all in the name of fun." They've obviously never had to spend their day off cleaning tp off their house just because some idiots had nothing better to do with their time. I think the way you feel is definitely justified.

If you saw a 10-year-old girl out in your yard in the middle of the night, you should probably have called her mom right away. Anyway, you should tell her now. Aside from the fact that it is vandalism (tho not the worst sort) it is not safe for such a young person to be out running the neighborhood at that hour. You could also call the police if you want; it was vandalism and unsafe for the child too.
And yes, it is a sort of tradition in California. Compared to some things kids do, it is relatively harmless. Some TP victims are amused, some annoyed, some both; it happened to my home when my daughter was 15. The dog kept barking, we finally got up and saw the TP. My daughter and I picked up the TP immediately, and my daughter looked at the ground and said, "These look like Max's footprints." The next day at school Max told her, "I heard you got TPd last night." Since the TP was cleaned up 20 minutes after it was put there, there is only one way he could have known about it!

You ARE a bit tightly wound over what is mostly harmless. Think on this, TP is completely biodegradeable. It isn't going to harm the environment or ruin the paint on your car (as an egg can do). A garden hose will get the vast majority out of the trees and such. So it's a bit of a mess and maybe unsightly, but there is no real harm that has been done here, so lighten up a bit. I would talk with the kid's parents (Of course, most parents will be in denial that their kid would do such a thing, so you may have a tough time) and let them deal with it. Maybe you can talk the kid's parents into getting the kid to help clean up the mess. And a warning does seem appropriate; this time we don't involve the law, but if it happens again the law gets involved.

Why?
It's just fun. I think you're just being a stick in the mud. They didn't harm anyone, it's just toilet paper.
And in case you weren't aware, which you should be, people like other people way before ten. It's not impossible.
Just drop it. There is no reason for such anger. It won't happen again. No one tp's a house more than once, that's just stupid.l

i was at a friend's house one time and went outside to pee (i had been drinking) and saw two guys tp'ing his trees/house, and a girl directing where to make the next throw. long story short there was a lot of fighting, and then a lot of making up and playing cards.

Yeah you way over reacted. When it happened to our house I simply called the parents of the kids and had them come over and clean up their mess. All your over reacting did was embarass your son. good going!

It's all fun! It just means that someone in the household is their friend and wants to pull a joke on them!
