Censorship has been around as long as civilization. It was introduced by religion/governments to keep order, prevent dissent, and most certainly to insure those in power stayed in power.

There are still some striking examples of ancient censorship in Egypt where names and images of certain Pharaohs have been erased off temples and walls.

Control. It has been happening for thousands of years. The rulers do not like the peasants thinking for themselves.
