After a night out drinking I was dismayed to find that I had a mayonnaise stain on my coat resulting from the chips and cheese I ate on the way home. All the care labels on the coat say that it should not be washed. I have scrubbed at the stain with water but to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas how to get rid of the stain (preferably without buying some expensive cleaning stuff as I am just a poor student)?

Are you sure thats mayo????? Once it dries you should be able to brush most of it off with a little wire brush that they sell for suede. Commercial cleaner could probably use an evaporative cleaner to get the residue out.

No, mayonnaise is an oil based stain and as a matter of fact you may have set it by scrubbing it with water. You need to have it cleaned professionally because the fluid used for cleaning will remove the oil from the stain and usually the actual discoloration with it. Do not try to clean it anymore by yourself. It will ruin it. Take it to a cleaners. It is cheaper than a new jacket and I don't even know if they can get the stain out if you already used water. Water in itself on a suede or leather if it hasn't been treated will stain.... Good Luck!

Hi,

Do you have any baby wipes?? these tend to get out almost any stains from anything. then brush with a suede brush to bring back the pile to the suede

Mayo contains oil.
You will need a detergent or the correct solvent.
If you have a science block at uni go and see them.
Do a sample test on a hidden bit i.e. inside the sleeve or somewhere.
