All pets have advantages and drawbacks.
Ferrets are probably out because they are seriously stinky.
Hedgehogs are ok, but they are nocturnal so they will be active and crashing about all night when u guys are trying to sleep. Hedgehogs can make a whole bunch of noise too.
Rabbits are ok too, and if you wanna spend the time and patience potty training it they can make good house pets. They are also easy to persuade moms to get because they look cute. However, they can have stinky tempers, and they require quite a lot of care and can run up huge vet bills. They also live for a loooong time, like 10 years, which can be a problem if you don't like them, get bored with them, or leave home.
The pet I would recommend in your situation is a rat! Seriously, ratties are really playful creatures and love human company. If you want an animal that can be trained to do tricks, will enjoy playing with you, and has a great personality then you can't beat a rat. The only real down-side is that it is hard to persuade your folks that a rat is a good pet! It is very rare to find a pet rat with a bad temperament, they have minimal vet requirements, and they are real personalities. Go ratties!

I would say a rabbit. I have had one and they are very low maintenance. you do need to make sure you are cleaning their cages -like any animal- or you can give it a litter box. just be careful of you are around a lot of people with it because they can get very scared. I would love to have a ferret but my parents are not ready. good luck if you get any pet! also, hedgehogs are pretty cool but I do not know much about them and if you happen to get a ferret just make sure you wipe them down with a wet towel every day or every other day because they can get S T I N K Y.

Then it has to be a ferret! I've got two. They are incredibly playful and into everything. They run around fast and also run backwards in excitement. You should choose males though because females have to be neutered otherwise they can die.
Ferrets, unlike kittens remain really playful for their whole life.
They don't have sweat glands so mustn't be exposed to temperatures above 75 degrees.
All young ferrets start off biting. But you can nip train them within a week. When they bite you, try not to react just push your finger slightly back in their mouth to cause a gag reflex. This doesn't harm them and they let go, they soon learn not to nip.
I can cuddle mine, if they stay still long enough! They always want to be picked up but usually they have a motive like it gets them nearer to the table where they wanna jump onto.
You will never be ceased to be entertained by these totally adorable little rascals.
How would your mum feel about how cheeky they are, though?
Oooh, one drawback, they stink. It's part of their defence mechanisim. It's kind of a musky smell. Never bothered me though.
Hope this helps.

Average price of ferret: $116.18
Avg. price of hedgehog: $92.50
Avg. price of a rabbit: $19. 56
If money is a concern, then perhaps you might want to rethink your list of possible pets. Hedgehogs, chinchillas and ferrets are not cheap, nor are their cages or vet bills. A very good source of information is "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Choosing a Pet." It compares many different types of pets, including the average costs of animals, veterinary care, food, and toys. I agree with the person who suggested a rat; they are social to humans and can be trained, and their upkeep is much less expensive. Just make sure you get it from a store, not the wild.

i'd go with a ferret or rabbit. i have 2 ferrets and have had rabbits for years as a child they both are great. but i am more for ferrets they are more playfull and interactive. BUT they are expensive and very involved. as they age they can get many types of cancer and other illnesses, they need vacinations, lots of attention and most of all TIME OUTSIDE THE CAGE. check out essentialferretguide.com; ferret.org; marshallpet.com and ferretfacts.com i hope this got to you in time!!!! oh and rats can be ok i've had 4 one was so so and another was mean my 3rd was GREAT i loved him very much BUT my last one was the devils rat i still carry the scar from almost 1 yr ago and all i was doing was feeding him!!!

Rabbits are very sociable and a lot of fun. They are very funny to watch and are a great friend to have around. Although, I'm sorry to say I don't know if an apartment would be such a good environment for them. Rabbits need a lot of space to run around, which means letting them out of their cage for at least part of the day so they can excercise. Also, the thumping may disturb people below you. Check out www.rabbit.org for more information on rabbits and if you're looking to adopt click on the link on the right in the middle of the page that says "adoption"

Have you thought about a guinea pig? There are many available from local shelters!
Stay away from ferrets! They are like having a bad three year old child in the house. They steal your stuff and need as much attention as a three year old. They are prone to very serious diseases, like adrenal disease. They are adorable and funny, so if you are absolutely sure you want one, reserach first and get in touch with your local ferret club. I worked in a pet store and say too many ferrets purchased on impluse! Not good for you for the ferret.

If you have time to spend playing with it and if you have a good sense of humor, nothing beats a ferret for fun! I had two, Frick and Frack, and what fun they were! And how ornery they could be. I could have spent my whole day playing with them and watching them run around the house.
