It seems strange that as we feel winter kick in with the clocks going back we have the two big festivals of Hallowe'en and tonight's Guy Fawkes' Night. It's like Baghdad here tonight!

I have always said christmas was invented to give us something to look forward to in the bleak winter so your theory may be true!

Well, I'm going to say no, and here's why:

The US has switched from Daylight Savings Time (DST) ending at the first weekend of October to DST ending at the last weekend of October during my lifetime. I have not noticed any growing intensity to the celebration of Halloween during that time.

Pagan festivals marking the halfway point between the Vernal Equinox and the Summer Solstice (including Halloween and the Celtic festivatl that inspired it: Samhain) probably predate DST--or even clocks--by a thousand years or more.

No but the placement of these events might be due to fact it gets dark early and weather is still not the coldest. Think about it. It's dark, but it really is not that late. The timing is perfect.

Its pure coincidence. What helps us when clocks go forward?

PS you can win a few bets with the question - Do the clocks go backwards or forwards? They always go forward or time would go backwards. Think about it.
