And how did you know it was the right time?
Did you read an article in a magazine?
Or did you just know?

You can start as early as you want. I started around 5 or 6 months. Sometimes its up to you and if he cry how long u can handle letting him cry. My doc. told me if i let him cry him self to sleep the 1st day is the worst and it will get easier as it goes on! but not to give in or your starting over. And he also said it will be hard on you but the baby will not die, he will sill love you, he wont remember anything. good luck

Hi! When my daughter was a newborn she slept most of the time anyway but didn't do well laying flat in a crib. She mostly slept in a swing or in her carrier -guess it was more comfortable to her. She started sleeping through the night completely on her own when she was about 10 weeks old and has slept through the night ever since. But to answer your question every baby is different but I think most babies tend to sleep more soundly in cribs when they are about 4 or 5 months old. Try to start getting in the habit of laying your baby down for naps on the bed or crib when he is 3 months. Keep a pattern and specific location for napping, a familiar blanket and a snuggly bear to cuddle with. And of course don't forget the binky! If you start at this age then your baby will develop a good habit of resting and will be happier. It's also helpful to lay down with him when you first start trying this and he will feel secure with your presence and will also understand that it is time to rest. Avoid eye contact and make sure that the room is dimly lit and a comfortable temperature. Good luck!

But to add another piece of advice. Don't let your baby just lay there and cry. Some people think that it is spoiling or this or that but your baby is small and he really needs you to soothe him and to make him feel secure especially the first year. Try your best to help him lay down for naps but if he isn't ready then don't force it and give him what he wants. He will be a much happier child this way and it may be difficult and tiresome to get through but he will not be a baby forever.

You can try to lay them down when they are really tired, like after nursing, or after you have rocked them for awhile. It might take awhile! If they fuss or cry, pick them up and wait a bit to try it again. When they cry it is a sign that they need something, even just that they need to be close to mama, so it's important that you respond to their cry and show them you are there for them.

My son is 7 months and I get him to sleep by nursing, or wearing him in a sling, or wearing him and bouncing on a yoga ball. Once he is asleep then I put him down.

Whenever they don't cry if you lay them down and leave. My 2 1/2 year-old can fall asleep on her own but usually prefers company. I don't mind- they're only little for so long. Teach them that you will meet their needs day and night and they will grow up to be happy and self-confident.

When they sleep 6-8 hours a night.
They are waking from HABIT rather than hunger by then...and should be able to fall/stay asleep.
