Convict cichlids are great because they don't get extremely large and are the best fish as far as breeding. They can be bullys at times though. It doesn't take much to get them to mate and they are rather hardy. A firemouth cichlid is usually around the same size and can hold it ground with others. A Salvini cichlid and a jewel cichlid are also good options to get.

1. Yellow labs (4)
2. Rusty cichlids (4)
3. smaller peacock cichlids (3- 1 male 2 females)
and
4. demonsoni (1)
OR
Afra (4 1 male, 3 females)
This makes a colorful, active set up that shouldn't be too high on the aggression scale for your size tank. They will breed in this set up so you'd have to decide what you want to do with fry (leave them in the main tank to be eaten and a few survive, or separate them and possibly sell/trade them).

On the other hand, you could do an all male peacock tank. You could have several different species in there. No breeding and many of the males should be bright (some of them might not color up all the way though).

A firemouth, a jewel cichlid, a blood parrot, & maybe a couple of Bolivian rams. A small pleco, like a bristlenose or rubber lip, and 6 cory cats for the bottom.
