Try some renting agencies in the town. Can be expensive and charge you extras but it will give you an idea of what is available and the kinds of prices in the area. Also check the local papers - both free and paid for and have a look - you will often find better deals in the paper. I've always rented directly from the owner and if you are careful about the owner and check that they don't have loads of properties it's much easier. If you get a 'serial' landlord they won't bother to fix anything and can be really tricky to deal with. Best thing is go have a look at a few properties in your price rang and out of it just to see what they are like and get a feel for waht you want and what to pay - take someone with you.
