No more so than Southern rednecks and Archie Bunker blue collar types.

It's a cultural attitude, the origins of which are unclear, but is likely related to attitudes still found in many tribes on the African continent, where homosexuality is considered a weakness and places the person at the lowest level of the pecking or dominance level in these societies.
But like any other human populations, the percentage of those born gay is similar, 5% at least - and some say 10%. That percentage of men is encouraged to keep their orientation secret, and the use of harsh terms is mainly based on attempts to remove all doubt that the speaker is either homosexual or has any sympathy with gay behavior.
Note the prevalent use of the term "on the down low" to describe African American men who do meet secretly to practice gay sex. Many of these men tell themselves they are not gay but just adventurous, and engaging in these acts for a different form of enjoyment - in other words professing that causing each other to feel sexual pleasure has nothing to do with male to male love, any more than masturbation does.
in some cases they may be right, but in many other cases this is a necessary rationalization to allow them to keep their self respect and macho status in their culture.

I don't know if it's that African Americans are more homophobic, but perhaps the hip-hop/rap/gangster scene is. Does that make sense? Black individuals (especially men) who feel a part of that participate in the homophobia that pervades it, which, in my opinion, comes from the machismo they uphold.
That's the only reason I can come up with.

Haven't noticed it one way or the other myself but I've heard of it. That is why many black gay men prefer to be on the "DL". However personally, I think that white evangelicals are the worst.

I actually saw something on TV about that... there is even this black male cult group called "The Down Lows" (I am not even kidding) Its a group of black males who are bisexual and lead heterosexual lives. One guy even said that in his hetero life he's a basher and still considers himeslf straight because he never takes it he only gives it!!! Here's how Wikipedia defines it... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_low
I found sites on it below too!!!

I never realized that...I'm canadian on the west coast of canada and there are few black people here...so i am not exposed to it.
BUT what I find really hard to believe is that a people who have been as oppressed as the blacks have been would inflict prejudice on another people.

Hmmmm.....by capitalizing the word MOST you are just showing another form of prejudice. How do you know MOST African American people feel that way?
Careful with the generalizations....it's not pretty.
