Skipped commercial baby foods completely and went straight to table foods with baby #1. Planning on doing that again with baby #2.

It's up to you, really. I started around 4 months, some wait till 5 some wait till 6. The only diff. between 1 and 2 is the thickness. If you do start , start with orange and give the same kind for 3 days to make sure there r no allergies! have fun and be prepared, its messy! LOL

About 6 months. Then after I got sick of spending needless amounts of hard-earned money on those stupid little convenient jars of nutrition, I started cooking my daugther's baby food myself! I set aside a Sunday once a month to cook up sweet potatoes and mash bananas and all the other things she can eat, I freeze them in ice cube trays and then transfer them to labeled plastic bags. We save a lot of money this way! She's 8 months now though and getting her teeth, so soon we will be able to start with cheerios and toast and cut-up food instead of mashed!

When my son was 3 months old, he noticed us eating normal food and make rooting gestures toward us. Of course we didn't give him any, but with him doing that, we decided it was time to transition him to solid food, rather than formula.
For a month or so, we gave him both formula and a ew spoonfuls of food. Then we transitioned him to all food by the time he was 5 months old.

6 mos is the recommended age for starting solids.
Bananas, avocados and sweet potatoes are the best first foods.
Making your own is MUCH cheaper and actually very easy.
