How wonderful was the timing of the Stonewall Riots and why did the rebellion against a police action became a landmark in a civil rights struggle?

I hope that most of the LBGTQQIA community know what the Stonewall Riots were. If you have no idea what they were, please don't answer.

Also, if you happen to know any good sites in which I can further my reading (I already used wikipedia), I would appreciate the link.

Thanks.

I don't know if "how wonderful was the timing" was rhetorical or not, but I will say that there were several homophile groups popping up in San Francisco, NYC, and I think Boston. The Mattachine Society and Daughters of Bolitis even started up unaware of the existence of each other: people were starting to realize that they weren't freaks and that maybe, just maybe, they actually deserved to be treated like human beings. Add a police action (which many gay bars, including the Stonewall Inn, were bullied into paying the mob for "protection" against) on the night of Judy Garland's funeral (not making this up), and you've got a lot of REALLY pissed off people ready to push back. If I recall, 365gay.com has a history section to browse through: I haven't spent too much time there, cause I kind of like to browse old bookstores and get queer studies textbooks n such. I would just say that it's important to note a WHOLE lot of awesome stuff going on well before Stonewall.

STONEWALL Rebellion Veterans Association, of course, tis the definitive answer! They are the Gay people who started it all on Friday night, June 27th 1969, the day of Judy Garland's funeral, at The Stonewall Gay Dance Club in Greenwich Village, New York City!
