Ask questions that someone your age should be familiar with. For instance, if you say something about a black and white tv and the person has no idea what you are talking about, then there is a very good chance they are in their twenties or younger.
Pay attention to grammar, sentence structure, or just what phrases they use. You can date just about anyone this way. I find the easiest way to find out gender is to discuss something universal to the gender.
Your other choice of course is to get off the computer and get involved with a group of people in real life. Then you can simply ask or observe.

You mean if someone in a chatroom or on a forum like this is pretending to be different from what they are?
It's tricky, and I can't say I haven't wondered myself, but I don't know any obvious ways. You'd have to read everything they posted and see if you could pick up clues, but it's easy to read far too much into innocent statements if you're looking for something in particular, so it wouldn't be foolproof.
It's scary, though, sometimes, to wonder exactly who you're talking to.

Or you could ask them. Why would they want to hide anything?
You can also look for subtle clues, like the mention of a husband or wife, the ages of their children.
PS I'm male and 47. Not so difficult, was it?

I don't think so...at least I wouldn't believe names pictures or ages over the internet..it's just too easy for some people to lie...not all of us do LOL(who would lie about being 57)

no there is nothing u can do unless they tell you. i think if you chat with them more often they wouldnt lie about their age.
