to me, happiness lies in the possesion of all the stuff I can buy with mere money

Oh, of course. There are enlightened monks and nuns and such who have given up all their worldly possessions and work only to support themselves and grow spiritually. They're happy and fulfilled and it's not because of the money they make.

This is why many lottery winners are still miserable after they win a bunch of money. It doesn't take away their problems--it just gives them new ones, ones they aren't prepared to handle because they have no experience being rich. Like on nip/tuck this season, when Rosie O'Donnell's character won the lottery but it totally didn't make her happier. She was happier giving her kidney to Liz because she helped save someone's life, and that didn't get her one cent in profit (she *lost* a body organ! She lost something and she felt more successful!)

Once you have enough money to survive, it really isn't going to make you any happier. I mean, once you get enough so that you aren't stressed about being poor (a huge stressor, let me tell ya!) then more money doesn't equal more happiness. Money is one cold achievement. Success has to come from other sources.

Yes, I agree with the sentiment that money cannot buy happiness (look at Heather Mills McSlapper). I also agree that it does make the misery at lot easier to bear.

well definitely not the possession of money...if you mean by achievement 'did I make a positive difference in the world' then yes I agree with you.....but as for achievement on its own...achieve what?
