I vote for both. I first look at the policies. Do they have the kinds of goals for the country as I do? My top three policies are: Iraq (out of), Environment, Health Care (universal). If a candidate has those goals in mind, they will probably get my vote. But I also want to study their record, find out more about their personal life, etc. If they have a good record, and a personal life that I think is good (and I'm not talking sexuality, sex scandals, etc. I mean who they associate with, how their religion and other things control them). You have to look at the whole picture, in my opinion. In addition, I don't think anyone can be expected to know all of these things about every candidate. It's important to learn all you can, but if I don't have time to learn about everyone, I will vote based on party.

I would vote according to the policies and ideas a candidate represent. But even better I would vote for the candidate I believe can represent me, my ideas and the candidate who can deal with emergencies better. Ideology and policy is okay, but situation can change. So the adaptivity of a leader is important also.

I try not to vote based on my faith in a person because, in reality, I don't know them.
I try to research what they stand for, and I vote for the one that seems to have the same values that I do.
Peace
