I get a message upon attempting to shut down Windows XP that tells me it can't be shut down and in order to correct the problem the message aks me to disable BIOS such as caching and shadowing, using safe mode if necessary. How does one do this?

Shadowing basically is where the BIOS program gets stored in RAM(memory) to run faster. I don't see how this would be a problem in Windows XP.

But to disable shadowing will require you to enter your setup or BIOS when the computer starts up. Here you can make changes. If it is a name brand computer like DELL, Compaq, HP, or Gateway I doubt you will have option to disable shadowing.

Never seen that message.

Copy all your valuable data onto an external hard drive.

Carry out the following instructions at your own risk
restart the computer and enter the BIOS usually by pressing the delete key.

Go through the various dialog windows, there should be a setting that says use optimum settings or use default settings.

Save the settings and exit. Now see if your computer boots up normally. If it does then shutdown wait for any error messages, hopefully there won't be any.

You should log on to your BIOS setup, this can be done by pressing Del button immediately after powering the computer on,the you can find it in the section named"ADVANCED BIOS FEATURES".
Note that this procedure is different in different motherboards and it would be better to refer to the manual of your mother board to find the exact procedure.
