Kids do this for a variety of reasons: don't want to miss out on anything; think that if they sleep then they miss all the good stuff that goes on after they are asleep; scared of something; have medical reasons why they can't sleep right away. There are just too many to know exactly why each kid does this.

The best way to help them is to have a routine at the same time, the same routine, every single night. Even if it's the weekend, they need to go to bed at the same time. I was a nanny for 2 years to 4 kids and I helped my ex raise his two kids. With the kids I was a nanny for, the two youngest ones (now 3 and 5) had a routine of bathrime, a slow calming video, then bed. Sometimes one of the older kids would read to the 5 year old. I always had a routine of things I would say and do with her while tucking her in. The 3 year old was a tricky one, tho, since he has severe autism. Autism, especially when severe, can make it so their brains don't register that it's bedtime, that they are sleepy, etc. So, they are very hard to get to sleep, even with meds. He would take hours to actually fall asleep, then wake up easily if anyone made noise.

So, I would suggest if you have kids or if you care for some kids, to make sure they have the same routine every night. In time, they will get used to the routine and will do fine. Then it will be easier for them to fall asleep.

Because you let them because you love 'em.You have been on this planet longer then them. Don't wary as they get older and go to school they hit their own routine. I promise that eventually you will get more quite time and sleep. Until they become teenagers and they wanna stay out all night. Isn't it ironic that during sex ed they told us about contraceptives but they never told us about how certain countries use sleep deprivation as a form of torture and how having little kids around would keep u from a full night sleep (some times getting up several times at night) for years and years? As*holes!!! If they told me that I would have used 2 condoms (just in case ;-)) an IUD and spermicide!!!!

I don't know how old your kids are but right from an early age I taught mine that bedtime was bedtime. They may not be sleepy but there comes a point in the evening when you need your time. My guys are now teenagers and I am usually in bed before they are! When they were little though if they could not get to sleep I let them read or listen to story tapes and so on. They knew that they were to stay in their room.

I've just put my 8 year old daughter to bed and I am now waiting for her to finish the story she is reading and settle down. I have to come out of the room otherwise she would stay awake all night. They just don't want to miss a thing - especially with the fireworks going off.

Try waking them up earlier and/or doing without naps during the day. My daughter's 4 I waker her up at 6 and put her to bed at 8 - within 10 minutes she's out cold.

Just to totally wind you up, lol. It can be a problem can't it? Try a stricter routine like tea, play, bath, read, bed. If they keep to the routine at the end of the week you'll boost their pocket money or something.
