i know this person who can easily talk to someone sitting next to her in class and can build up conversation with someone she doesn't know, and can talk to adults easily too. she can also participate in group conversations quite easily. however, she's afraid to participate in class, approach groups of people she doesn't know, and do anything that attracts attention, like go up to the teacher in front of the entire class. is this shyness or social anxiety?

That's perfectly normal. Going up in front of the class attracts a large amount of attention as opposed to talking to someone sitting next to you. She probably just has a fear of public speaking, which many people (shy or outgoing) do.

Shyness is the layman's term for social amxiety. And yes it is just that, but lucky for her the social anxiety is limited to a certain area so she will be easily treatable someday should she decide that she wants to be less shy

I would not even think of recommending drugs (Paxil, Zoloft, etc.) unless her behavior approached that - by anaology - of a diabetic not taking insulin. Then you know you are dealing with a bad GABA receptor, and it is time for the serotonin reuptake inhibitors before it goes really bad.

it might actually be nervousness, due to being afraid of looking stupid or something like that, but more likley than not, she is exaggartating it and its not as big of a deal as she thinks. It's nothing wrong with her, its pretty normal. = ]
