I've never thought of New Moon (or Twilight for that matter) having a theme. A word I typically reserve for studying works in literature class--poems, short stories, and otherwise boring novels with tons of scholarly articles written about them. However, I would say the book was about how far a person would go to save another in the name of love. If I had to come up with a theme that would be it. Edward thinks he can 'save' Bella by staying away from her. What he does he does out of love. And Bella when she knows Edward is in danger does the same. She risks her life to save his. And the opening scene of the book where the two are watching (and reading) Romeo and Juliet could play into the theme of love and sacrifice.
