Know where the exits are in case of a fire.
If there is one, feel the door before you go through it. If it's hot, find another way out.
Crawl to escape a fire: There is smoke but little oxygen where you normally stand.
If you're in a multi-story building, use the stairs to get out: The elevator shaft is a natural chimney flue, and chances are good the elevator won't work anyway.
Don't leave combustibles near heat sources.

don't store anything on or under stairs. keep all doors accessible(ie-don't block a door with a couch or chair) don't overload your outlets & don't use an appliance if the cord is frayed. store combustibles such as gasoline outside of the house. don't leave your stove unattended when cooking. test your smoke alarms monthly
