I believe most laptops either have a standby or hibernate feature where after a certain time the laptop shuts off automatically. i don't think it's bad to leave it on all night, but if you're laptop has this feature, there's no need to worry about it. it'll turn off by itself.

99 % of the time , all that happens is the battery will die. worst case of what could happen the laptop wouldnt turn back on till battery recharges ( even if it is plugged in. you still have to wait till the battery recharges some before turning it back on. ) and if the laptop does over heat there is a possibility that the processer could be damaged. if there is too much heat to the processer , you will have to replace the part. i found out the hard way.
