It's along the lines of being called "rough around the edges". I personally would consider it an insult because I'd like to think I am already the diamond. But if I was 14, I'd be honored that someone thinks a diamond is there somewhere.

This Phrase Is Not Exactly An Insult, It Merely Refers To The Fact That You (Or The Person Whom This Phrase Has Been Directed At) are a person who is waiting to be discovered and when discovered you shall be nothing short of being called an invaluable asset.

A diamond initially began as a lump of coal. When mined, it's virtually impossible for the untrained to distinguish one from the other rocks in the mine. "A diamond in the rough" means that underneath your visible facade lies an extraordinary, priceless gem. I would consider that a compliment.

Its actual a compliment - a great one. It ability which you have the flair to be between the greats. you haven't any longer reached it yet if you consider which you're nevertheless a artwork in progression, yet as quickly as you do, you would be a tension to reckon with.

I don't think so myself! They may be it as one at first but if it's after the change I don't think so. I mean you could be unlikely to do something yet you turn around a show people up! You than able to be proud of something when everone else was putting you down you showed them that you are the best or can be better then them

This is a great compliment. Saying you are the most sophisticated amongst the more un sophisticated. May not be too good for the company you were keeping at the time!!!

They used this phrase to describe Aladdin in the Disney film when he was still a 'street rat' but he went on to become a prince. Really means that what is inside of you is what counts and not where you are or your circumstances.

i don't think its an insult- on the one hand it could mean you've got really good potential, and on the other hand it means you've got a raw talent..think of a diamond before it's been cut

It means that you have a kind heart and would help anyone but you are not sophisticated. Well ...sort of....I would not like that said about me...it would mean to me that the other person felt superior to me class wise.
