Do banks usually have the ability to verify that dollar bills being deposited are real and not fake?

They do have the ability, but they will probably confiscate the money if it is found to be fake. There are cheap devices you can get to check money yourself. They are called Counterfeit Money Detection Systems and the lower end ones sell for under $20.00.

surely there are websites with info about spotting and detecting counterfeit currency. I have a crisp $2 I saved from 1976, and I think there have been others issued since then, but I'm not aware of any issued very recently so they won't have all of the special anti-counterfeiting features of the latest currency.

YES .. there is a simple pen that the mark the bill with that will verify if it is genuine or fake...

if you go to walmart, go into the office supplies section and they have the pens that mark currency. it is like 2 pens for 7 bucks
