this is known as humdingers theory of quantum sockification.
basically the roatation speed of your washing machine becomes so high that an inaudible frequency causes a small rift in timespace, on the other side of this rift is a manufacturing plant specialising in making socks (probably located in china), they use advanced technology to identify where and when a rift has been opened and use their own reverse cycle washing machine to open their side of the rift - once a channel has been created in timespace mr chong just puts his hand in and takes a few socks - this way there will always be a demand on the sockmarket for new imports.

Some socks never make it into the laundry. Some never make it out of the laundry but go down the drain. Some fall behind or get kicked under both the washer and dryer. I have personally found many socks in around and under washers and dryers and my customers always say "so that's where it got to". Some get into legs of pants or shirt sleeves or inside of shirts or in other garments due to static cling. Some are discovered and some are not but fall out after the static cling has worn off. Some are hung up inside the garment they are clinging to or put away in a drawer folded away inside those garments. Many resurface but many are lost for ever. How many times have you just thrown out odd socks and much later discovered it's mate or aquired a new odd sock not realizing it's mate had been thrown away weeks or months ago.
If you are missing kid's socks they may turn up just about anywhere including at the bottom of a toybox or way back on the floor of a closet.

What happens to socks and other small articles with high nylon content, is that static electricity is created in the washer, and especially in the dryer. This electrical charge can make the smaller items stick to, or possibly inside of larger pieces! It is incredible how they can hide even when you are looking carefully!
If you use a fabric softener (the liquids seem to work best) properly, (i.e. add to rinse water or to 2nd rinse) you may not be bothered by the problem again! Your machine may have an apparatus for dispensing the softener. Make sure it is not clogged.

There are some women who will throw out a mans sock if it has a hole in it or is worn. I am also convinced there are some washing machines that eat socks. I think a Maytag washer picks out a sock and says, tag, your it, the puff, your sock is gone. A Westinghouse washer will toss your socks out of your house. A General Electric washer will electrocute one of your socks and burn it up. That is why I buy sereral pair of socks at a time. the same style and only in black, brown or dark blue. That way, I never miss any socks. Just one day they are all gone.

Delicate washables like socks, hand kerchiefs, panties, bras, should be put in a Wash Bag (made of nylon mesh with a zip at the mouth) for washing in Washing Machines. In the case of socks, Socks clip can also be used.
When machine washed without Wash Bag or Socks Clips, it leads to missing socks, elastic wearing out, reduced life of socks etc.
Do you know that one of the important reasons for washing machine breakdown is socks, which get struck in the washing machine between outer and inner drums, blocked washing machine hose pipe, socks turning to lint due to machine washing, etc., ?
To put it Short and Sweet, use Wash Bags or Socks Clips to solve the issue of Missing Socks.

On one occasion we emptied out the laundry bin and washed every (man) sock we could find - when we came to hang them out to dry we had a total of 39 odd socks. Can anyone beat that or is it a record?

Don't you know that single socks have to be sacrificed to the laundry gods??!! If there are no sacrifices made there can be terrible natural disasters like overflowing washers and dryers that won't dry.......
But never fear, on occasion the laundry gods see fit to return the soul of a sacrificed sock to its mourning partner at the bottom of the sock drawer. When this happens there is much rejoicing and merriment!
