If you're near Santa Monica, how about a stroll along 3rd St. Promenade? It is always entertaining and there is plenty to enjoy for free, like street performers, book stores and unusual shops. You can also stop for coffee or dessert along the way.
And of course, if you want to get really romantic, you're also only a couple blocks from the ocean. There is a nice walking path by the beach.

Take a walk on one of the piers in the Southbay - Manhattan Beach Pier, Hermosa Pier - then stroll down the path along the ocean.

the beach, quite simply. there's just so many of them, i know on some random nights (usually weekend) they have bonfires (people just start them and whatever), usually venice.
another option would be the west hills/woodland hills arena, up on valley circle (blvd?). there is a lot of places to climb and whatever much fun.
