I know Paxil causes birth defects when taken during pregnancy, but I've been on it for 2 years and now I'm worried the effects will be lasting and I won't be able to have children without the risk of birth defects.

Due to severe depression with my last baby I was on paxil the entire time. I gave birth to a perfectly healthy, beautiful baby girl. Weighing in at 8 pounds. My doctor just told me that we had to look to make sure she didn't have problems breathing after birth. But she didn't and she is very healthy now. (16 months old.) Paxil only stays in your system for about 1 month after you stop taking it. Don't worry about the paxil. My doctor said "keeping mom healthy is just as important as having a healthy baby." Good luck

Paxil is a Pregnancy Category C drug, which means either

1. That animal studies with the drug have shown birth defects, but there are no studies in pregnant women;
OR
2. Studies in animals and women are not available.

Keep in mind that this information applies to being pregnant WHILE taking the drug. Once you stop taking it, it is out of your system in a very short period of time (I can't think of any drug that is not gone within a few months at THE MOST, but Paxil is much shorter).

For an official answer, you should ask your doctor, of course.
