I'm planning on studying sociology or joint sociology and business next year at uni.
Those of you who do have a degree in sociology, what did you do afterwards?

My first degree is in Sociology.

Everyone laughs about Sociology degrees, don't they?

Recently a young woman called me. She was doing research on crime and fear of crime for the Scottish Executive. She asked me the usual questions, I answered them, then she asked me about my educational qualifications.

When I said I had a sociology degree she laughed! Didn't even apologise!

OK. So I was pissed most of the time. I did as little work as I could get away with. But I still got a 2:1!

All this happened in the blissful times of student grants when you got paid for getting pissed and sh*gged at the taxpayers' expense. Happy days.

Anyway, I got a job in a Housing Association. I'm now (many years later) a management consultant and have my own business.

Sociology degree didn't do me any harm!

You might want to consider doing a postgrad course after your degree in something like housing or social work. But if you're doing business studies as part of your degree you'll probably find it easy enough to get a job, provided you get a "good" degree (1st or 2:1).

Good luck!

Have fun with Maslow's hierarchy of needs, and don't get too depressed by Durkheim's anomie.

I did my degree nearly 10 years ago now. The only thing I've done related to it was earn £10 an hour helping a 6th former do his 'A' level in sociology for a couple of months. No one I'm still in touch with does anything related to their degree in this subject but I'm only in touch with a couple anyway! For me, it's only useful in that I can say I have a degree. The course may be very different nowadays but when I did it there was a big focus on designing and carrying out research; this could lead to work for a sales/marketing company. At the beginning of my 3 years a senior lecturer admitted that the aim of a sociologist was to write books that new sociology students could buy!!! It's like a self-perpetuating subject!

I have a Sociology degree and I am a Federal employee in charge of chemical warfare defense training for the US Army (no kidding). I have also worked as a computer programmer, corporate recruitment director, whitewater river guide and camp director.
Everyday I apply my knowledge and experience dealing with organizational and group behavior in business and government bureaucracy.

If you enjoy sociology, study it. The good jobs will naturally follow.

Sociology and philosophy degrees are not meant to get you a job, these are `living life` degrees, they teach you how to understand life and love and people, they are among the most valuable of degrees, because what they taught you will stay with you all your life. Only fools laugh at these degrees, the people who have gained them are the ones who have the knowledge, they are the ones who are laughing.
