I've got the impression that Austrians are really boring xenophobes with no redeeming features at all. Am I right and if so, why? What's wrong with them?

Just to clarify:

The Swiss are also very boring people, about the same as the Austrians, but the Germans are much less boring. What is it about the Austrians which makes them so dull?

Ok, expanding the question as "boring" seems to be causing confusion: Are they just plain nasty people with a superior attitude? Or are the best thing ever?

I have been to Austria every winter for the last 4 years - I have found most people friendly and helpful, some really nice.
Yes - you will find some who aren't - but then it's the same here in the UK.
It does help if you can speak a bit of German - like please and thank you etc - they really appreciate you trying. If you want some help with that visit the BBC web page shown in sources below. I find it useful.
However, many of them speak English anyway.
It is a lovely country and well worth a visit. Salzburg is a great place to visit and the Alps are stunning in winter. And probably in summer too.
If you have heard bad reports about them is it from people who didn't make the effort to say a few words in German or to appreciate their culture ? After all, we like it when foreigners show us those sort of courtesies.

I wouldn't say so, not in Vienna at any rate. Granted most austrians are rather conservative whioch may lend them a certain aura of reservedness and wariness of outsiders, but many Austrians i've met are great people always friendly and up for a good time

In 1997 i was in Austria with my family . I don't remember if these people were boring but they were really mean. We stopped with our car on a parking and police made us pay a fine while at the same time they didn't do anything to the other cars. I think it was just because we were from Eastern Europe. I really don't like Austrians...

I have been in Austria last winter.I have the best impressions from them.I really found them very kind and polite. The same period I visited Prague and then Berlin.I can say that both, citizens of Prague and Berlin, were so impolite. They didn't ask to questions, they didn't speak english, they didn't want to help anyone.Austrians,in the opposite were very helpful.I found them very civilised and I am really going to visit Austria again.I loved Austria!

Hilter was Austrian. I think they are jealous they didn't come up with lederhosen first.
