Are you talking about her genre of song - or - just her singing voice? While I am not keen on the style songs she sung, for that genre she was the Madonna of her day.

Born, Ethel Agnes Zimmermann, her Broadway show songs were to die for. She had a pitch perfect Alto Voice ya know.

Personally I could care less about her singing style -but the woman could croon. She was married to Ernest Borgnine in 1964 for just 32 days. she died in 1984

Psst--she died in 1984. No one sounds good being dead that long.

I do remember seeing her on some variety shows, she was a very powerful singer, probably shook the stage with her voice.

Your question made me chuckle. I didn't think there was anyone who still remembered her. And I agree to a point.

Her popularity was based according to her time. It was also based on her choice of material (popular songs of patriotism) and at that time, this country was in a huge morale slump. So I guess she filled a needed role.
