An individual's psyche isn't only what you see, think, or believe here and now. The human psyche is formed by three individual, yet correlated levels:

- the conscious - the here and now, the things you see and are aware of, the things you can control, maneuvre, or sense.

- the subconscious - the hidden personality of you, what you don't know about yourself; it is not controllable, but is a very strong side of an individual's personality, directing us and making us take certain decisions. What triggers the subconscious to become conscious is our dreams. Unfortunately, interpreting our dreams is a very difficult task, and has a very high chance of error.

- the unconscious - this is the deepest side of an individual's psyche, which you will never be aware of. Rarely, little information from our unconscious is sent to our subconscious, but has little to no chance of becoming conscious.

In answer to your question, the things you "see" when you close your eyes might be triggered by the subconscious level of your mind, but it might as well be when you go to bed, the first phase of the sleep, the somnolence, with the appearance of first theta waves.

So as long as you don't close your eyes and totally forget about yourself during classes, work or when you go out, i can assure you that what you're experiencing is very normal.

I can close my eyes and see a purple unicorn if I want, but that's my imagination and doesn't make me abnormal. If I close my eyes and see random images, that could be my unconscious at work and that's fine too. If these images disturb you and affect your life severely, only then should you consider seeing some type of counselor.

As anstein said we humans just use 12% of our IQ (intelligence) so it's for sure that sometimes when you try to relax or to not think about anything the other 88% of your IQ reminds you that you are not using all the 100% of your IQ by showing you images!!! Thats why!!!
