Games consoles are a bad idea at any age - let alone four. The leap pad is great for learning computer-based familiarity and reading - I'm all in favour of that - and there are also some good educational games on the cbeebies website. However, commrecial games don't encourage any good behaviour in young children - and if you start your youngster young, then you'll have an addiction for life - don't give in to peer pressure either - most of those games are pure brain rot - use technology selectively to have the great little inquistive child that you love - and not a 14 year old antisocial monster!

Something educational.....
However, don't even think about buying a mainstream games machine. It will inhibit development. Take the four year old out in the fresh air and encourage physical activity which will in turn develop the mind, whilst building on social skills.
A much better idea than sitting around glued to a screen?

My four-year-old has a V*Smile by VTech. She has fun when she uses it, there are a variety of age appropriate games, and it helps her learn numbers, letters, sorting, etc. It has two-player capability, if I'm ever in the mood to join her. I am also careful to limit her usage, so that she is not constantly in front of the TV. The V*Smile line also offers some new accessories, such as a drawing tool and a dance mat. If you're in the US, check Target and WalMart or any toy store or electronics store. This game system and its accessories are also available in the UK.

i dont think a 4 years old child has to play video games . And i think on the 4-5th grade a child has to use computers for their education, but if they starts to play games parents must to give only 1 hour. Playing games on the computers can make children more intelligent , but if computers are used rigth way.

Not strictly speaking a console, but at this age my children enjoyed using an Eye-Toy. It's a USB camera that allows you to move your body and join in the games.

Personally I think 4 is a bit young to be getting hooked on games consoles - I would prefer to get my child hooked on books and sociable activities.

4 is too young in my opinion and I play the things all the time. You must realise they consume vast quantities of time and stifle creativity in most people, myself included which is harmful when you consider yourself artistic and creative or even just intelligent.
You would be making a big mistake introducing games into a 4 year old's life.
