Go to your browser and type in this web site.
http://www.cccleaner.com
It's free and excellent for getting speedier service out of your computer. Sometimes just viewing web pages, surfing, etc. these sites lodge " cookies " in your hard drive, even after leaving so called sites, these cookies remain, slowing up your machine..
So download the cc cleaner and this should clear up your problem. good luck.
Also, along with this cleaner you should defrag and possibly disk clean-up, but this cc cleaner is something you need, you can use it to clear out cookies on a daily basis.

512 megs is small nowadays. Also, it has to do with your processor as well. Some apps like F-secure is notably heavier than some other and if you are running xp things get worse. I don´ t know the AVG but if your machine is low-end you should seek for the lightest possible solution, a bare minimum config as well.

a 25 gig drive is pretty small perhaps you are running out of space try cleaning the drive of any uneeded files..it may also be that the drive is an old 4200rpm drive and is accessing the data slowley

Yes. My AVG loves to bog down my laptop also. Try to disable AVG when you are running intensive tasks and run AVG only when needed, like when you browse the internet or run suspicious programs. My laptop has 1.25GB of RAM, 1.7 GHz processor, and lots of free HDD space and AVG still bog it down.
My dual-core processor desktop is not bogged down by it though, as it is dual-core.
