Preferably something academic, besides teaching.

I majored in history (actually had a double major) back in the early '60s. I became a commissioned officer in the Navy and had a 28 year career. My interest and knowledge of history served me quite well in my Naval career. It is not quite academic but it is a field in which there is tremendous opportunity.

You may also look into working for the Government archives service or The National Park Service. Archives would tend to be Academic and NPS would be more hands on.

More importantly ask yourself what YOU want to do with your life.
By the time one finishes college you should have a fairly good idea what YOU want. If you can't answer that question looking at yourself in the mirror then no one on YahooAnswers will be able to help much.

Good luck!!

Teaching is the best option. These days people do not have a big interest in history unless they have to for school. Maybe work in a museum or the government would work best for you. Good luck
