I want to scope out a class just to see what it's like before I may sign up for it next semester. Am I correct in saying "auditing" and what would be the best approach to appease the professor?

I would not audit the class because you still have to pay for it and do the work, but you don't get credit for it. I suggest taking the class and withdrawing if it's not for you, or you can always call or email the instructor and ask them the specifics of the class before you register.

It could be, but remember that by auditing, you still have to do all the work, just not receive a grade for it. I've never audited a course, but I had a professor who talked about people auditing her class and not expecting to do anything. I'd say many professors agree and expect the same level of work as from the other students.

Why don't you just go sit in on a few lectures? If there's a lot of people in the course, no one will notice.
