Hi there:
There are clear sheets of plastic that can be used in photocopiers, laser printers, and inkjet printers. Every major manufacturer of printers has their own Name Brand film supplies which they would recommend, but there are generic sheets that are available in most stationary stores.
A few years back there WERE, indeed, special cartridges for printing overheads, since the yellows, in particular were bleached out by the intense light of the projection bulb. Newer inks use pigments and dyes that make the yellows better suited for this application, but you would be smart to outline lighter objects of yellow or faint colours, with a bold line, if you want to make the objects clear on the large screen.
The special overhead colored inks would use a yellow that was almost red on paper. If you look at overhead projection markers, they will have a yellow that is brownish reddish yellow on paper as well. On the screen, it just looks like ordinary yellow.
Typical transparencies for laser and injet, in this example, for HP,
are found at:

laser transparency paper HP typical

and you can find any brand of printer with its own transparency available.
Hope this clears up the issue

There is no need for a special printer or ink. I belive that you can print directly on the clear lexan sheets as though they were paper. I would be careful, though. Logic dictates that the ink may be fragile when printed on such a surface.

These type of projectors don't require any kind of special paper of ink. They'll project anything that's put into the optic "Inlet". Even if it's not inked paper (no, no! I didn't mean "Try your butt on it!"!!!!)
:D
Cheers.

You can use any printer (laser or inkjet) but you need to use OHP film to print on. Be sure to buy the right kind for your printer.
