Why did he make the character of Borat come from there and not from some other country in that area? Who else thinks he's really funny?

Kazakhstan is considered one of the places where the 10 Lost Tribes of Israel wound up after being carried away into captivity in 722 BC. Cohen's mother is a Persian Jew who is from that general region.

Well, there are not a lot of ppl who know where Kazakstan is, so what is a better way to create a character without preconceptions or stereotypes. It then allows him a medium in which to point and satirize the foibles of American culture.
