The only right way is to treat your pet, your house and your yard thoroughly, and all at the same time (preferably by a pest control company). Your neighbors may have to do the same. Anything less than this and you may only be wasting time and money.

A friend of mine lived in Hawaii and her dog came home covered in ticks and fleas. She took the dog down to the ocean and put it in the water. All the fleas and ticks came off, apparently they didnt like the salt water.
When you're giving your pet a bath, before you get them out put some regular Dawn dishwashing liquid on them and rub it in & rinse out. The de-greasing power makes the hairs slick and the flea's little legs cant grasp them to stay on your animal. A small amount of regular hair conditioner will work just was well as Dawn. :)

It's amazing how many people see these answers and miss them.
Bomb the house, go away for a few hours. I use double the bombs, then we vacuum the heck out of everything, the furniture, wash everything, including the clothes your wearing. Scrub the animals to within an inch of their lives.
When they go outside spray the area they stay in, the grass, the trees. Don't take a chance at re infestation.

clean the floors and furnature religeously, put the animals outside and spray with a good quality insecticide, wait awhile and ventilate thouroughly, then keep the pets away form where ever they got the fleas in the first place to prevent re-infestation
