A TV in the bathroom? Never would do that. I don't have the money to have a ski boat either. I'm just making it. I would like that have my life as secure and comfortable as possible. That's why I'm avoiding buying an Ipod.

There are some. Personally, I find owning a boat a real show off piece. Maybe three times a year, and a lot just sit in the slip for months at a time

No. Not necessarily. And no more than any other human beings. Humans collect stuff, because stuff acts as a security blanket and expresses social status.
We've just become less thrifty. We should all be forced to go back to the pioneering days for two weeks to get some exercise, dust off our priorities, and remember that wealth is freedom to accomplish our will, not merely an accumulation of junk in the garage.

of course it's not necessary, but without being offensive america has been built on capitalism, so materialism is the least you can expect, of course I can't make generalisations because the Americans who I have met have been sound, but as a nation you don't travel much, you need to deal with that before you can escape the need to keep up with the Jonses and see what a truly awesome planet we live on. But please believe it's not just the Americans who are materialistic. The west has lost the it's way

I fight it in myself every day! I was just telling my husband that I was fighting the desire to go buy a lottery ticket after watching a show about million $ lottery winners. We don't have a boat anymore, nor a tv in the bathroom. But plenty of other unused 'necessities'! Sad, huh?

Yes we have, and no, clearly it is not necessary to own so much STUFF. The bigger problem behind the waste is how the gathering of it affects daily life, and how our needs for excess affect politics.

Yes we have become materialistic. We've also become an unholy nation at the same time.

Yup we are extremely materialistic, and even if you don't mean to you somehow are but yeah ... that's why I want to move somewhere else where life is more chill and possessions come second
