Or to clarify: are movie stars "good" actors?

yes. An actor is a person that can portray a character in film, stage or on the air and is excellent at his/her craft with the ability to perform well from any script and ad lib or improvise successfully if necessary. An actor with talent can usually work consistently but not in lead roles.
A movie star is an actor that has been fortunate enough to make an impression on the general public that become his/her fans and generate the big bucks for the movie studios. Much has to do with agents, PR and all the other stuff that goes into creating an image that the public (like sheep) will buy. Not all so called movie stars are GOOD actors.

Most actors work on the live stage, some are also movie stars. Many movie actors do not do stage work.

I would say actors can be any person that does that art ... and well movie stars are those actors who managed to make it big

In my mind, actors can actually act. Examples would include Robert DeNiro or Cate Blanchett.
Movie Stars, on the other hand, are just lucky to be in movies. Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler would be examples of this.

all are actors(so they say!). A few become movie stars. I think money is the dividing line. If your a draw and pull them in to see you.....act......then your a star!

Not all actors are in movies.
I can act at work, I can act at the mall, I can act at school
But I doubt I could act in a movie..althoguh I wanna.
