The weekly salary of an employee is $150 plus a 6% commission on total sales. The employee needs a minimum salary of $650 per week. How much must be sold to produce this salary?

My answer: $150.00 + 6% commision of sales

6% of 100 is $6.00
6% of 1000 is $60.00

$60.00 x 9 = 540 for a weekly salary of

$540 + $150 = $690.00 per week

Also

$60.00 x 8 = $480 for a weekly salary of

$480 + $150 = $630.00 per week

Total sales must be between $8,000 - $9,000 per week.

To be exact I think it would be Around $8,300.00

This is a great estimate for this problem! Good job!

If you want an exact answer, you can just set it up a little further. You already have that the weekly salary is $150 + 6% of sales.

If we let 'x' be the amount in sales and convert 6% to .06, we can derive the equation

150 + .06 x = 650,

which is the equation to find out how much in sales the employee needs to make exactly 650.

Then we do algebra:

.06 x = 500

x = 500/(.06) = 8333.333333. . .

So your estimate was really close. Keep up the good work!

Back calculate

Required amount is $650 per week
Salary is $150
hence $500 from commissions
6% of some value say C should give us $500

therefore C=$500/( 6%) = 500x100/6= $8333.33

the sales must be at least $8334 per week

The employee needs $650/ week. He gets $150 week so he needs an additional $500 week from his 6% commission.

So 6%x =500
.06x = 500
x=500/.06 = $8,333.33 total sales required.

Yes that's right. He has to make $500 in commissions, and 6% of sales are commissions.

So, 0.06 x sales = commissions
0.06 x sales = 500
sales = 500/0.06
sales = 8333
