The storage temperature of a computer must satisfy the inequality
|t - 78.3| < (the < is underlined) 38.3 where t is given in degrees Fahrenheit. What are the maximum and minimum temperatures?

|t - 78.3| ≤ 38.3

So either t -78.3 ≤ 38.3 whence t ≤ 116.6
OR - (t - 78.3) ≤ 38.3
whence - t ≤ - 40 ie 40 ≤ t

So 40 ≤ t ≤ 116.6

OK, the absolute value of the temperature - 78.3 degrees must be less than or equal to 38.3. (You can write that as <=, by the way.) That means that the difference between the temperature and 78.3 degrees must be less than or equal to 38.3. So the lowest possible temperature occurs when the temperature is exactly 38.3 degrees lower than 78.3, or 40 degrees. The maximum temperature occurs when the temperature is exactly 38.3 degrees higher than 78.3, or 116.6 degrees. So the range is 40-116.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

|t-78.3| <= 38.3

so minimum t occurs when t-78.3=-38.3 so t = 40 degrees fahrenheit.
maximum t occurs when t-78.3=38.3 so t= 116.6 degrees fahrenheit.

break it up into 2 equations so...(whenever i write < or > make sure you add the underline okay?)
1. t-78.3<38.3
solve for t so,t<116.6
2. t-78.3>-38.3
solve for t again so, t>40
so for the max and min temperatures.
116.6>t>40
